Beauty Favourites 2015: Face

face1

During the summer I loved my Honeypie Minerals Foundation, which I purchased the full size of. In the colder months or for a night out I prefer my Rituals Gemstone Foundation. For liquid foundations I’ve been using Boots Botanics – All Bright Radiance Balm as a base for a couple of months now, it gives a nice glow to the skin.

To set my makeup I almost exclusively used MUA’s Pro Base Prime & Conceal Powder, which I actually bought for a Halloween look if I remember correctly. It does a great job though. I mix all the colours and apply it lightly and my makeup stays matte for a while.

A purchase on a whim turned out to be my favourite everyday blush: MUA’s Lolly. A long time favourite of mine, and unfortunately not available anymore, is Catrice’s Multi Colour Blush in Gone With the Wind [Hollywood Fabolous Fourties Limited Edition]. Last year I mentioned my Everyday Minerals’ blushes and they are still products I use on a regular basis.

I think in the last two years, a lot more products have found their way into my makeup routine. Not necessarily on a daily basis, but certainly when I feel like putting on a full face of makeup. When I never seemed to bother with Contouring and Highlighting in the past, I know have a couple of favourites for both categories.

face3

I would say Beauty UK’s Baked Box Halo 3 is my No. 1 highlighter. I also really enjoy Topshop’s Glow Highlighter in Polish and Illamasqua’s Gleam in Mirage. For highlighters cream products work quite well for me. Not so much for contouring though. I have Illamasqua’s Cream Pigment in Hollow, but although the colour is great I just never really reach for it. Instead my current favourite is Makeup Revolution’s Mono Eyeshadow in Mocha Love, which I use as a contour shade. It is very pigmented and suitable for pale skin.

Beauty Favourites 2015: Lips

lips.png

In my review last year I mentioned the Essence Long Lasting Lipsticks, which I still love. They are great products for everyday, easily applied, good colour selection and all of that for a small price tag. I wouldn’t say that they are actually long lasting, but that aside I love them and carry them around in my handbag all the time. I’ve recently purchased a new one from their Nude range called Come Naturally. I should probably work on the post I’ve promised last year already. 😉

I am also still loving Catrice’s lip polishes that unfortunately left their range and I have no idea why. If you know of any similar products, please let me know in the comments. Another staple is Illamasqua‘s matte lipstick in Shard, it just wears really well and I love the dark red colour.

I am new to LA Splash Cosmetics, but couldn’t help but follow the hype around their liquid lipsticks, particularly Ghoulish. Though it is quite drying after a while, I really like wearing it as it doesn’t need to be touched up all the time. If I learned anything this year about lipsticks then it is that I don’t want to worry about the colour on my lips all the time. I like products (or a combination of products) that allows me just that: Look good without thinking about it. I’ve just recently ordered two more of their Dia de los muertos collection that I should be showing you soon.

I’ve got two Gosh lip liners now and I think they are great quality and definitely worth a try if you come across them in the drugstore. This year I bought Nougat Crisp, a lovely brownish colour that suits the lipstick Nougat by Gosh perfectly.

Beauty Favourites 2015: Nails

I think I certainly established this year my two favourite nail polish brands, which are Illamasqua and Zoya. Personally I prefer Zoya in terms of ingredients as they are 5-Free and according to my knowledge one of the least harmful ones out there. Besides that they come in a huge range of finishes and colours. I like Illamasqua because they tend to have some really unique colours that I don’t find anywhere else.

If you are looking for a natural remover, I highly recommend you try Fresh Therapies Natural Nail Polish Remover, a remover that not only smells nice and contains safe ingredients, but also dries out my nails a lot less than your standard nail polish remover.

What are your favourite nail polish products this year?

Illamasqua – Pure pigments [Updated]

illamsqua_purepigments

Illamasqua – Pure Pigment (£17.00/1.3g)

What Illamasqua says:

Made to be played with. A metallic, high-shine, pure-colour powder that highlights eyes, cheeks and brows. Mix with eye shadow, blusher or use it on its own to intense effect. Bring out your bold side.

Pure Pigment can be applied dry or wet for a bolder colour pay-off. To intensify the colour, apply over a cream texture, as this will hold the colour in place and amplify it. Alternatively mix with Sealing Gel and apply using a fine brush for a shimmering liquid eye liner. When applied with a long bristle brush, Pure Pigment can also be used as a highlighter anywhere on the eyes, face and body.

What I say:

Lovely colours, my personal favourite is Static as it is very versatile. The white base has some blue and pinkish sheen to it. Great eyeshadow to highlight the inner corner of the eye or get some duo-chrome effects on top of other darker eyeshadows. As with most loose eyeshadows you will have to watch out for fallout. Besides that they are easy to apply. They would also be suitable as eyeliners when applied with a mixing medium. You can find some great swatches over at Variolavera.

NOTD – 13.09.2015

notd 13.09.2015

I found these beauties at TK Maxx. When they first came out in 2013 I have been eyeing them and considered getting them. For some reason I never bought them, but when I saw them for £3.00 I could not resist this bargain. And I am so happy I got them. They lasted almost a week without chipping on my nails, which for me is unheard of. Most nailpolishes will have show some signs of wear after 2 days, if I am lucky 4 days.

7 Shades of Pink… Blushes

7shadesofpinkblush_01

Steffi from Smoke & Diamonds started a blog series called 7 shades of… where bloggers present 7 shades of one colour in one category, e.g. eyeshadow, lipstick, nail polish and so on. Until the 8th June you still have time to participate in the current round where it is all about the colour pink. You can share your posts via InLinkz on her blog. See also my previous post on 7 Shades of Green and my 7 Shades of Pink… Lipstick.

The oldest blushes are the Manhattan ones from a Limited Edition that was released during the Oktoberfest time in 2011. They are baked and very pigmented, I only need a tiny amount when I use them, and I still do when I want some bright pink cheeks. The Sleek blushes, i reviewed them recently here, are the very bright and shimmery Mirrored Pink from the Aqua Collection and Pomegranate, one of my favourite Sleek blushes. I also recently posted about my two Illamasqua blushes, which last really long on me and are again of bright pink colour. Last but not least my Everyday Minerals Blush in Nick Nack, which is a brilliant everyday blush that is subtle, yet makes you look more refreshed and defined.

  • (1) Everyday Minerals – Mineral Blush in Nick Nack
  • Sleek – Blush in Mirrored Pink 846 (Aqua Collection LE) [now available as part of the Eye & Cheek Palette in Dancing ’til Dusk]
  • (2) Manhattan – Zuckerl Rose 55V (Oktoberfest LE)
  • (3) Illamasqua – Powder Blusher in Hussy [also available as part of the Face Palette in Semblance]
  • (4) Manhattan – Gaudi 65V (Oktoberfest LE)
  • (5) Illamasqua – Powder Blusher in Thrust
  • (6) Sleek – Blush in Pomegranate 923 [also available as part of the Eye & Cheek Palette in See You at Midnight]

New In: Illamasqua Bits and Pieces

newin_illamasqua

I recently found some amazing bits and pieces by Illamasqua when I went to TK Maxx. I just couldn’t resist these lovely nail polishes although I promised myself to stick to Zoya. This might remind you of my post on cruelty free cosmetics when I said you have to try and do the best you can. This time I obviously failed, because I just wanted to get these amazing colours. At least I know they are cruelty free, so that is the most important thing!

About:

This make-up brand, that empowers people to express their individuality, has been making a scene in London since its launch in November 2008. The product of a heady mix of influences; from its roots in the dark and illicit 1920s Berlin club scene, to a rich heritage in the manufacture of make-up for film and theatre, Illamasqua takes its inspiration from members of the ‘alternative scenes’ for whom self-expression is paramount. Champions of creativity and fighting against injustice wherever we go, our highly-pigmented, long lasting products provide consumers and make-up artists alike with the products and inspiration to ensure they can express themselves, whoever they are and whatever look they want to achieve.

I’m a bit of a punk rocker at heart and I felt like there needed to be a new brand to stir up the market. I’m a brand builder and my proximity to make-up is more through youth culture. In the very early days when I sat there with a blank piece of paper thinking about Illamasqua, I always remember writing that this brand had to give women the permission to wear make-up loud, proud and bolder than they ever have done. I certainly came into the make-up sector with the intent to revitalise it and take artistry to the next level. For my role, I never had any intention to direct a look, but rather inspire it. (Julian Kynaston)

Illamasqua (a combination of ‘Illusion’ and ‘Masquerade’) is the brainchild of Yorkshire marketing guru Julian Kynaston who, without any previous experience in the world of makeup, launched the brand to reflect his passion for all things subcultural. (The Guardian, 2011)

Illamasqua is ‘make-up for your alter ego’. We are a truly professional, night-time brand that stands for self-expression, and empowerment. Our purpose is to give customers the confidence and the know-how to unleash their personal alter egos through their make-up. (Becoming-Beautiful.com)

What I say:

You might have noticed by now that I like Illamasqua products. In terms of colourful makeup they do offer a range of great products that you will not find in the drugstore. The quality of all products I have tried so far is good to very good. I love matte lipsticks and they have great variety of them in their range. The nail polishes have been one of the few that last a couple of days on my nails without chipping. I usually buy from Illamasqua when they have a sale on, which is a couple of times a year, where you will be able to pick up products often for half the price.

Illamasqua Blushes

illamasqua_swatches

Left: Powder Blush in Hussy; Right: Powder Blush in Thrust

Illamasqua Powder Blush (£21.50/4.5g)

What Illamasqua says:

Illuminate, radiate, make your face come alive with the colour and drama of Illamasqua Powder Blusher. Colour-intense and highly pigmented, use it to shade, brighten, enhance and define the shape of your face. Be bold, be daring, be the centre of attention.

What I say:

illamasqua_hussy

Hussy is a beautiful matte, pink blush with a coral touch to it. It is also available in the powder blush duo blush set together with Lover or in the Multi Facette Palette in Semblance that I have reviewed before.

illamasqua_thrust

Thrust is a matte, magenta blush with a purple tone to it. Both blushes are very pigmented and I only pick up a tiny amount of product when applying. This also means that it is very buildable. Both last on me all day long and are certainly of better quality than any drugstore blushes I have ever tried.

They are not the cheapest option when it comes to a nice blush, however, Illamasqua often offers special discounts, which is when I tend to pick up things from their website. Because it is so pigmented, the product will last you a long time though. I am very happy with my powder blushes and would certainly consider to pick up more shades from their selection. I am kind of intrigued by Naked Rose and Disobey.

As a side note, these blushes might NOT be vegan, as some shades can contain Carmine.
