Beauty Favourites 2015: Lips

In my review last year I mentioned the Essence Long Lasting Lipsticks, which I still love. They are great products for everyday, easily applied, good colour selection and all of that for a small price tag. I wouldn’t say that they are actually long lasting, but that aside I love them and carry them around in my handbag all the time. I’ve recently purchased a new one from their Nude range called Come Naturally. I should probably work on the post I’ve promised last year already. ūüėČ

I am also still loving Catrice’s lip polishes that unfortunately left their range and I have no idea why. If you know of any similar products, please let me know in the comments. Another staple is Illamasqua‘s matte lipstick in Shard, it just wears really well and I love the dark red colour.

I am new to LA Splash Cosmetics, but couldn’t help but follow the hype around their liquid lipsticks, particularly Ghoulish. Though it is quite drying after a while, I really like wearing it as it doesn’t need to be touched up all the time. If I learned anything this year about lipsticks then it is that I don’t want to worry about the colour on my lips all the time. I like products (or a combination of products) that allows me just that: Look good without thinking about it. I’ve just recently ordered two more of their Dia de los muertos collection that I should be showing you soon.

I’ve got two Gosh lip liners now and I think they are great quality and definitely worth a try if you come across them in the drugstore. This year I bought Nougat Crisp, a lovely brownish colour that suits the lipstick Nougat by Gosh perfectly.

7 Shades of Red… Lip products

Steffi from Smoke & Diamonds started a blog series called 7 shades of… where bloggers present 7 shades of one colour in one category, e.g. eyeshadow, lipstick, nail polish and so on. Until the 7th December¬†you still have time to participate in the current¬†round where it is all about the colour red.¬†You can¬†share your posts via InLinkz on her blog.¬†I’ve linked my previous posts for Green, Pink and Purple and Blue below. I’ve also posted my favourite red eyeshadows recently.

  1. Essence – Long lasting lipstick in 01 Coral Calling
  2. Catrice – Infinite Shine Lip Gloss in 070 Very Very Raspberry
  3. Catrice – Made to Stay Smoothing Lip Polish in 070 Red-Volution
  4. Sleek – Matte Me Ultra Smooth Lip Cream in 434 Party Pink
  5. Lancome – Rouge in Love in 163M Dans ses bras
  6. Illamasqua – Lipstick in Shard
  7. OCC – Lip Tar Metallic in Black Metal Dahlia

What a classic red lips are… everyone has to love the way how red lips make you feel that bit more glamorous and sexy. I’ve chosen a variety of different shades and textures, because honestly, there is just so much to chose from.

The Essence one is a great one for everyday, easy to apply and very moisturising. I like¬†the Catrice lipgloss especially for a natural summery look. Red-volution works great for a night out, it stains the lips and the colour slowly disappears and is easy to re-apply. Although Sleek’s matte lip cream is called Party Pink, to me it is more of a corally red. It stays on well due to the matte formula, but can feel a little dry after a while. Lancome’s Rouge in Love is one of my more expensive lipsticks, but I have to admit that so far I rarely ever wore it, which is a shame. The formula is lovely, it glides on the lips and stays on well. Especially for fall, Shard is one of my favourite colours and has been featured on the blog a couple of times. Black Metal Dahlia is a similar shade, but the metallic effect makes it very special.

What is your favourite red shade?

7 Shades of Purple… Lipstick

Steffi from Smoke & Diamonds started a blog series called 7 shades of… where bloggers present 7 shades of one colour in one category, e.g. eyeshadow, lipstick, nail polish and so on. Until the 8th July¬†you still have time to participate in the current¬†round where it is all about the colour purple. You can¬†share your posts via InLinkz on her blog. Hopefully I will be able to make another post on eyeshadows ad/or nail polishes. See also my previous post on 7 Shades of Green,¬†my 7 Shades of Pink… Lipstick¬†and 7 shades of Pink… Blushes.

  1. Collection 2000 – Lock ‘n’ Hold in 6 Twisted Disco
  2. Essence – Long Lasting Lipstick in 09 Wear Berries
  3. Catrice РVelvet Matt Lipstick in C02 Of Royal Blood
  4. Sleek – Matte Me in 431 Fandango Purple
  5. MUA – Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer in Kooky
  6. Sleek – True Colour Lipstick in Exxxaggerate
  7. OCC – Metallic Lip Tar in Technopagan

I love purple lipstick and I think even my first lipstick ever was purple. ūüôā I don’t very often wear lipgloss (oups yes, a lipgloss sneaked into the lipsticks…) , but I really like this milky soft purple. My go to colour when I want an everyday suitable purple lip is definitely the Essence Long Lasting Lipstick, it is so easy to wear and touch up during the day. You might remember that you have seen the Catrice Of Royal Blood before in my pink lipsticks. First of all, you probably notice that I really like the colour and second of all, it is just that kinda shade that is in between being pink or purple. Fadango Purple is a great matte bright shade that lasts very well. Kooky is the same idea but a darker blue based shade.¬†Exxxaggerate is another matte shade by Sleek which is a lot more vibrant than on the picture. Great for statement lips! And finally OCC’s Technopagan, an absolutely stunning metallic blue based purple that dries down semi-matte. I absolutely love this¬†colours, but I admit I haven’t worn it very often yet, as it takes some effort to put on seamlessly and it wears off unevenly. What are your favourite purple shades?

7 Shades of Pink… Lipstick

Steffi from Smoke & Diamonds started a blog series called 7 shades of… where bloggers present 7 shades of one colour in one category, e.g. eyeshadow, lipstick, nail polish and so on. I certainly love pink lips, which is why I have a rather big collection of pink lipsticks. I tried to find 7 ones that I use the most. It seems I really like Catrice’s pink lipsticks as three of them found their way in my Top 7. All three of them were limited editions and are matt colours. Illamasqua and Sleek are also matte and both are very long lasting on the lips. Lastly I have a lip lacquer, again with a matt finish and OCC’s Yaoi, a metallic, shiny pink.

I am planning to post again this week my 7 shades of pink blush, so stay tuned!

New In: MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer in Tranquility

Makeup Academy –¬†Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer in¬†Tranquility (¬£3.00/6ml)

crueltyfree copy

What MUA says:

Smooch your way to red carpet glamour with MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquers. Long – lasting and kiss proof, these intense formulas come in five rich, vampy shades. Encased in chic frosted glass packaging, these lacquers glide on with the ease of a gloss, drying in seconds into a matte velvety texture. They are the ultimate make-up bag must have.

What I say:

From left to right: Tranquility, Funk and Kooky

I really like the lip lacquers by MUA. I also have two more colours called Funk and Kooky. Yes, they are drying on the lips, but most matte lip colours are and for the price I think they are really good quality. You can buy them at Superdrug or online. Compared to the two Sleek Matte Me ones, I think the MUA ones are less drying on the lips and they do last longer. Tranquility is a great everyday shade that I like wearing to work.

Illamasqua – Lipsticks

illamasqua lipsticks

About Illamasqua Lipsticks:

Let your lips speak volumes. Indulge in colour-intense lipstick with a highly pigmented formula, available in a choice of flawless finishes, from creamy matt to iridescent finishes. Illamasqua Lipstick glides on smoothly and doesn’t give up without a fight for the perfect all-night pout. A must have for professional make-up artists, and those who want to make a statement.

My overall thoughts:

Besides Atomic, all the lipsticks I own by Illamasqua come with a matte finish. These kind of lipsticks tend to be more drying on the lips than a cream finish and these ones are no exception. I think a lip balm is needed before application, otherwise my lips start to feel very dry too quickly. Especially with the more extraordinary colours like Apocalips, Disciple and Pristine I always use a lip liner (or eyeliner for that matter) as it can look a bit funny when the border of the lipstick is not super crisp. I noted down below what liners I use with every one of the shades, but you can obviously also just use a transparent lip liner to help you creating a nice outline and prevent bleeding. Last but not least I think it does help to use a lip brush when applying these lipsticks. Although the shape of the bullet allows a good application, using a lip brush will help to get a more even coating on your lips.

(1) Atomic РFuchsia Violet, Semi-matte finish

My thoughts:

This lipstick was released with the Atomic Nature collection in 2011. I like to use an old lip liner by the brand For You called Frisbee’s for eyes and lips¬†in the colour #02. I think it is a nice shade to wear during the day and I would say it is my favourite bright pink lipstick at the moment. In comparison to the other matte shades it is less drying and more comfortable to wear. See below how MagiMania and KakaBeauty wear Atomic:

(2) Shard РRed Violet, Matte finish

My thoughts:

Shard was part of the The Sacred Hour collection from 2013. I like to use it with my Gosh Velvet Lipliner in 003 Cardinal Red. And what can I say besides what a stunning shade this is! A great berry colour and now my favourite lipstick by Illamasqua.

Check out below some inspiration how to wear Shard by Mouldy Fruit and Jamie Genevieve.

Other reviews and swatches:

(3) Apocalips РTeal, Matte finish

My thoughts:

Apocalips was part of the Human Fundamentalism collection in 2012.

My first Illamasqua lipstick as I just fell in love with the colour. Definitely not the colour everyone would wear out and I have to admit I am still building up the confidence to wear it out. I wore it twice in public when I was in London. Somehow I felt in London you can wear anything without being stared at the whole time. ūüôā

The lipstick itself has a lovely matte finish and last well on my lips. I prefer to wear it with a lip liner though. I will have to look for a new liner to wear with it as I threw out my Sleek Eau La La Liner in Cobalt. Any suggestions for a replacement are most welcome.

Check out below some inspiration how to wear Apocalips by Killercolours, Fashonicide, Variolavera and Letzmakeup.

Other reviews and swatches:

(4) Disciple Deep Navy, Matte finish

Disciple was part of the Art of the Darkness collection in 2010. I apply the eye definer in 06 French Navy by the Body Shop before I add the lipstick. I find this one suits my pale skin better than Pristine, however it wears off rather quickly on my lips.

Get some ideas how to wear this lipstick below as worn by Ivy Experiments and Sokolum.

Other reviews and swatches:

(5) Pristine Pure Black, Matte finish

Illamasqua Pristine

Similarly to Disciple¬†I find that Pristine does not last too long on my lips. I recommend wearing a lip liner, for example¬†Nyx’s Retractable Liner in Black Lips, which I am using with Pristine.

Check out these lovely looks using Pristine by Jamie Genevieve, MothMouth and Pretty Trivialities.

Beauty Favourites 2014

This year I really discovered mineral makeup for myself. Often it works better for me than liquid foundations and lasts a lot longer. I particularly enjoyed using the BM Beauty Foundation in their sample sizes I bought, which I already reviewed for you. My favourite concealer is also from the mineral makeup section and I hope to make a blog post about it for you soon, the Mineral Concealer by Lily Lolo.

This year I fell in love with Everyday Mineral Blushes and bought three overall in the shades Nature’s Sweet Side, Nick Nack (which you can both see above) and Disco Inferno. They are very pigmented and a little product goes a long way. Big plus for me is that they last better on my skin than any other of my blushes, hello Sleek, I am looking at you.

I am still using my Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer, which I think will go off soon. I always liked it but recently it doesn’t extend the longevity of my eyeshadow as much as it used to, but as I said, I think it is due to the product getting old. I found the Concrete Minerals’ Electric Eye Primer to work better to enhance eyeshadows with some shimmer, duo chrome effects or glitter in it.

Concrete Minerals’ Zombie Girl Collection¬†was one of the most used eyeshadow (sets) in my¬†stash this year. You can create lovely natural looks and I think my favourite colours are ‘Blood and Guts’ and ‘Graveyard’. I posted some swatches earlier this year.

I found some great eyeliners in the Zoeva Graphic Eyes (in the picture above from left to right: 01 Female Attraction, 02¬†Good Karma, 03¬†Mr. Marvelous and 04¬†Rock’n’Roll Bride)¬†as they are super creamy to apply but once they have dried they stay in place. The colours are just amazing and I am very tempted to buy some more as they released some new shades late this year.

Another mineral makeup product I really enjoyed this year is the Everyday Minerals’ Mineral Eyeliner in Smokey. Back in the day my favourite eyeliner used to be¬†Maybelline Liner Express, I really loved the felt tip, but now I am quite happy with my alternative. I also found a liner by P2 last week or so, which has a similar applicator to the Maybelline one, so we shall see if it wins me back next year. Find below some looks¬†where I used the Everyday Mineral Eyeliner.

I definitely loved my Catrice Lip Polish in Megan Fuchsia. I liked its effect¬†so much that I bought another colour recently called Red-volution. It has an amazing¬†finish that I can only describe as wet-looking. Once it dried off a little bit you are left with a stain on your lips. Therefore it is great to wear everyday because it does not need much touch ups at all. The texture and finish reminds me of Yves Saint Laurent’s Glossy Stains, though I actually prefer the ones by Catrice, not to mention that they are a lot more affordable.

For matte lips, I really do look Illamasqua lipsticks, and my absolute¬†favourite colour is called¬†Shard, a dark plum kind of colour that applies well and stays on for quite some time. Catrice has some nice lipsticks with a matte finish as well by the way, this year I loved the Velvet Matt Lip Colour¬†in ‘Pink Punk’ and ‘Of Royal Blood’ from their Rocking Royals Limited Edition.

Another great find this year are the Essence Longlasting Lipsticks. They are great lipsticks for everyday use as they have a nice selection of wearable shades that feel great on your lips. And although they are very moisturising they still last well on the lips and can be applied without much effort on the go.

I have posts planned on my Essence Longlasting Lipsticks and Illamasqua Lipsticks, so I will try to post them soon so you can find more information and swatches about my favourite lipsticks. Below some swatches of the above mentioned lipsticks:

  1. Illamasqua – Lipstick in Shard
  2. Catrice РVelvet Matt Lip Colour in  Of Royal Blood [Rocking Royals LE]
  3. Catrice¬†–¬†Velvet Matt Lip Colour in Pink Punk [Rocking Royals LE]
  4. Essence – Longlasting lipstick in Coral Calling
  5. Essence – Longlasting lipstick in Wear Berries
  6. Catrice – Lip Polish in Red-volution
  7. Catrice- Lip Polish in Megan Fuchsia

OCC Lip Tar in Technopagan

I recently bought the lip tar¬†in Technopagan from the Unknown Pleasures Collection by OCC after I have seen so many swatches of it only. I just could not resist! It is rather difficult to get an even outline. At the moment I use OCC’s Colour Pencil in Anti-Feathered¬†as a base and to stop it from bleeding. I also sometimes try to mix a lip liner by using whatever blue and purple eyeliners I have at hand. I haven’t worn it out yet, but I do love the colour that changes from blue to purple depending on the light, how much you apply and what your natural lip colour looks like.

OCC Lip Tar vs. Sleek Pout Paint

What Sleek says:

Pout Paint is a lip stain like no other! Providing lips with intense colour and a long-lasting finish, it’s the perfect product when you demand more colour. Pout Paint is made to be mixed, so the possibilities are endless.

  • Provides full coverage that is light weight
  • Non-sticky and extremely buildable

What I say:

When Sleek released the Pout Paints in 2011 I was very excited to try them and bought three colours, namely 156 Peachy Keen, 162 Milkshake and 154 Mauve over (see swatches below in the same order). I think I’ve never worn the colours individually, only when I mixed them. Obviously that is part of the attraction of both, Pout Paints and Lip Tars, that you can get creative as well and try to create your own shades. They are very liquid to apply but dry down after a few minutes. They have a sweet scent to them, not overpowering though.

Ingredients [Codecheck]:

Polyisobutane, Polybutene, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Beeswax, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Silica, Butylated Hydroxy Anisole, Glycol Distearate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcic (Sweet Almond)Oil, Octyl Palmitate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Squalene, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin and Fragrance. May contain: Titanium dioxide.

Suitable for vegetarians. Not suitable for vegans.

Price: £4.99/3ml

What OCC says:

LIP TAR: MATTE‚ĄĘ is a¬†liquid matte lipstick with unparalleled pigment intensity and wear time. Only the smallest amount is needed for opaque coverage. Infused with state of the art hi-resolution metallic pigments, the unparalleled opacity of Lip Tar has gone high-voltage with an intense shimmer finish. STAINED GLOSS‚ĄĘ is OCC’s newest texture innovation for lips. Inspired by lighting gels and stained glass, STAINED GLOSS‚ĄĘ combines the high impact color of Lip Tar‚ĄĘ with a translucent glossy finish that’s ready-to-wear from its first slick application.

Contains Organic Hemp Oil & Soy-Derived Vitamin E, for a finish that feels as good as it looks! Paraben-Free courtesy of refreshing Peppermint Oil.

100% Vegan & Cruelty-Free

What I say:

Lip tars are now available in three different formulations, the traditional matte one, a glossy one and a metallic one. From the four that I own, Black Metal Dahlia¬†is my favourite. It has a very thick formula that stays on the lips very well. Lydia, my second favourite, has the traditional formula and is a very nice nude colour. It doesn’t look very opaque in the swatch, but it actually applies well on the lips. The problem is that if you store them the oil separates from the colour, which also happens for the Pout Paints of course, and you should try to mix them properly before applying them to your lips. Yaoi and Batty are a bit more difficult to work with. I feel like they smudge more easily and also the little glitter particles spread over the rest of my face as well. Overall I feel they are a bit more drying than the Pout Paints. They smell very minty when applied, but the smell doesn’t linger for too long.

Personally I am more intrigued with the available shades that OCC has to offer. If you are looking for a product that is very affordable and you are happy with the colours offered by Sleek you should go for it. OCC does offer packs of several ‘mini’ colours once in a while, that might be a good option if you are not sure if you like the formulation of their lip tars. As you only need a tiny amount of product for both, they¬†will last you quite a while if stored well. As mentioned above both formulas tend to separate over time, so it is important to shake and mix them prior to application or possibly squeeze out a bit of product before putting it on your lip brush.¬†Both are best¬†applied with a lip brush by the way. Though both products are cruelty-free, only OCC offers vegan lip tars, which in my books is definitely a plus and they also have the better ingredients list, so I think you can tell which product is my favourite. ūüôā
