Beauty Favourites 2015: Face

face1

During the summer I loved my Honeypie Minerals Foundation, which I purchased the full size of. In the colder months or for a night out I prefer my Rituals Gemstone Foundation. For liquid foundations I’ve been using Boots Botanics – All Bright Radiance Balm as a base for a couple of months now, it gives a nice glow to the skin.

face2

To set my makeup I almost exclusively used MUA’s Pro Base Prime & Conceal Powder, which I actually bought for a Halloween look if I remember correctly. It does a great job though. I mix all the colours and apply it lightly and my makeup stays matte for a while.

A purchase on a whim turned out to be my favourite everyday blush: MUA’s Lolly. A long time favourite of mine, and unfortunately not available anymore, is Catrice’s Multi Colour Blush in Gone With the Wind [Hollywood Fabolous Fourties Limited Edition]. Last year I mentioned my Everyday Minerals’ blushes and they are still products I use on a regular basis.

I think in the last two years, a lot more products have found their way into my makeup routine. Not necessarily on a daily basis, but certainly when I feel like putting on a full face of makeup. When I never seemed to bother with Contouring and Highlighting in the past, I know have a couple of favourites for both categories.

face3

I would say Beauty UK’s Baked Box Halo 3 is my No. 1 highlighter. I also really enjoy Topshop’s Glow Highlighter in Polish and Illamasqua’s Gleam in Mirage. For highlighters cream products work quite well for me. Not so much for contouring though. I have Illamasqua’s Cream Pigment in Hollow, but although the colour is great I just never really reach for it. Instead my current favourite is Makeup Revolution’s Mono Eyeshadow in Mocha Love, which I use as a contour shade. It is very pigmented and suitable for pale skin.

The palette contains the Sunrise Blush and Suede Blush along with eyeshadows from the Au Naturel i-Divine Palette. The eyeshadows are really pigmented and easy to apply, particularly Conker is very smooth. I’m really happy with this palette as it includes two blushes by Sleek that I haven’t got yet and the colours are really versatile. As always, a palette like this is very handy when traveling or when you don’t want to think about matching your blush and eyeshadows in the morning.

7 Shades of Pink… Blushes

7shadesofpinkblush_01

Steffi from Smoke & Diamonds started a blog series called 7 shades of… where bloggers present 7 shades of one colour in one category, e.g. eyeshadow, lipstick, nail polish and so on. Until the 8th June you still have time to participate in the current round where it is all about the colour pink. You can share your posts via InLinkz on her blog. See also my previous post on 7 Shades of Green and my 7 Shades of Pink… Lipstick.

The oldest blushes are the Manhattan ones from a Limited Edition that was released during the Oktoberfest time in 2011. They are baked and very pigmented, I only need a tiny amount when I use them, and I still do when I want some bright pink cheeks. The Sleek blushes, i reviewed them recently here, are the very bright and shimmery Mirrored Pink from the Aqua Collection and Pomegranate, one of my favourite Sleek blushes. I also recently posted about my two Illamasqua blushes, which last really long on me and are again of bright pink colour. Last but not least my Everyday Minerals Blush in Nick Nack, which is a brilliant everyday blush that is subtle, yet makes you look more refreshed and defined.

  • (1) Everyday Minerals – Mineral Blush in Nick Nack
  • Sleek – Blush in Mirrored Pink 846 (Aqua Collection LE) [now available as part of the Eye & Cheek Palette in Dancing ’til Dusk]
  • (2) Manhattan – Zuckerl Rose 55V (Oktoberfest LE)
  • (3) Illamasqua – Powder Blusher in Hussy [also available as part of the Face Palette in Semblance]
  • (4) Manhattan – Gaudi 65V (Oktoberfest LE)
  • (5) Illamasqua – Powder Blusher in Thrust
  • (6) Sleek – Blush in Pomegranate 923 [also available as part of the Eye & Cheek Palette in See You at Midnight]

Sleek Blushes

sleekblushes_swatches

Sleek Blushes (£4.49/8g)

What Sleek says:

Our blushers are long lasting and highly pigmented available in a variety of finishes. Each shade glides on smoothly and enables you to create an array of stunning looks. We offer a wide range of shades to complement any skin tone, no matter the occasion.

What I say:

sleekblushes_mirroredpink

Mirrored Pink was part of the Lagoon LE in 2013. It is now available in the Eye and Cheek Palette in Dancing ’til Dusk. I love this shiny pink colour, particularly in spring and summer.

sleekblushes_pomegranate

Pomegranate is probably my favourite blush by Sleek and is part of their standard product range. It is also available as part of the Eye and Cheek palette in See You At Midnight. I would describe it as a mix of pink and red with a slight shimmer to it.

sleekblushes_rosegold

My first Sleek blush and probably also one of the most hyped ones out there is Rose Gold. Many bloggers compared it Nars Orgasm, which I don’t own, but I will link you some comparisons below.

sleekblushes_honour

The Honour blush was part of the 2012 Limited Edition Collection they released during the Olympic Games. It is a brownish red that I personally love to wear in autumn.

Overall I think these blushes are a good option in the drugstore, as they are very affordable and generally also very pigmented. Sleek says they are long lasting, however in my experience they kind of disappear after a while. Other blushes like the ones by Illamasqua or Everyday Minerals last a lot better on me. That being said, I do enjoy using them and think for what they cost they are good quality.

sleekblushes_blushby3

Sleek Blush by 3 (£10.00/20g)

What Sleek says:

The ultimate cheeky palette offering you three times the impact. Includes three complementary shades, each designed with its own distinctive finish, from rich shimmers to intense matte shades.

  • Available in eight unique colour combinations designed to suit all skin tones
  • Each shade can be used alone, or layered for a unique look
  • Each palette has a versatile selection of shades to take your makeup from day to night and keep it on trend from season to season
  • Set in a mirrored compact, ideal for touch-ups throughout the day

What I say:

The above Blush by 3 is the Sugar one, which includes the blushes (1) Turbinado (2) Muscovado and (3) Demerara. My favourite colour out of the three is the one in the middle, which is also the most pigmented one. I sometimes use it as an eyeshadow as well. The two other matte shades are a lot more chalky and take more effort to blend them nicely. Overall, a handy palette if you are traveling because you have several colours to choose from.

Illamasqua Blushes

illamasqua_swatches

Left: Powder Blush in Hussy; Right: Powder Blush in Thrust

Illamasqua Powder Blush (£21.50/4.5g)

What Illamasqua says:

Illuminate, radiate, make your face come alive with the colour and drama of Illamasqua Powder Blusher. Colour-intense and highly pigmented, use it to shade, brighten, enhance and define the shape of your face. Be bold, be daring, be the centre of attention.

What I say:

illamasqua_hussy

Hussy is a beautiful matte, pink blush with a coral touch to it. It is also available in the powder blush duo blush set together with Lover or in the Multi Facette Palette in Semblance that I have reviewed before.

illamasqua_thrust

Thrust is a matte, magenta blush with a purple tone to it. Both blushes are very pigmented and I only pick up a tiny amount of product when applying. This also means that it is very buildable. Both last on me all day long and are certainly of better quality than any drugstore blushes I have ever tried.

They are not the cheapest option when it comes to a nice blush, however, Illamasqua often offers special discounts, which is when I tend to pick up things from their website. Because it is so pigmented, the product will last you a long time though. I am very happy with my powder blushes and would certainly consider to pick up more shades from their selection. I am kind of intrigued by Naked Rose and Disobey.

As a side note, these blushes might NOT be vegan, as some shades can contain Carmine.

New In: Illamasqua – Face Palette in Semblance

semblance_palette_02

semblance

The face palette consists of the following Illamasqua products, which are also available separately:

  1. Gleam in Mirage
  2. Powder Blusher in Hussy
  3. Cream Pigment in Hollow
  4. Eyebrow Cake in Thunder
  5. Powder Eyeshadow in Slink
  6. Powder Eyeshadow in Dizzy
  7. Powder Eyeshadow in Tango
  8. Powder Eyeshadow in Obsidian

What Illamasqua says:

semblance_palette_01

Multi Facet Palette comes housed in a sleek, mirrored compact. Complete with a mini double ended angled and blending brush this features 8 ‘must have’ shades to complete a full variety of eye and cheek looks. Use the double ended brush for eyes and brows and fingers for cheeks. With new Gleam in Mirage, best sellers Cream Pigment in Hollow, Eyebrow Cake in Thunder, Powder Blusher in Hussy and four beautiful Powder Eyeshadows you can create a multitude of looks with just one palette.

What I say:

Overall, the palette is very compact and offers a range of products to create an (almost) full face of makeup. I think the palette will come in very handy when travelling. If you are new to Illamasqua, this is also a great way to try different products and their formula, before committing to buy the full size.

semblance_eyeshadows

The eyeshadows are very buttery and pigmented. I tried the included brush to apply them, which did work, but will not become my preferred way of application. The colours are all blendable and work well together. I can see myself grabbing these in the morning when I want a quick makeup look. Find below two eye makeups that I created with the palette.

eotd semblance eotd semblance

semblance_contoureyebrow

Hollow is probably the product I was most excited about, as everyone and your mum have been raving about this product. Most people use it as a contour shade for pale skin, but this ‘matt and crease-resistant formula has been designed for use on the face, eyes, lips and body’. I used my finger to apply the product but am wondering if it might be easier to blend with a brush. I definitely have to try this product a couple of more times to see how well we get on, but the colour is certainly well suited for pale skin.

The eyebrow powder in Thunder luckily goes well with my skin tone and hair colour, yet I think it is very difficult to offer one shade that will suit everyone. If it doesn’t match your skin tone, you could always use it as an eyeshadow though. The product can be applied dry and wet. I prefer to use it dry with the included angled brush, but that may just be because I am not used to do my brows with a liquid/wet product.

semblance_blushhighlighter

If you have read my post on Sleek’s palette in See You at Midnight, this might sound familiar to you… I already own the powder blush in Hussy, a beautiful bright pink shade with a matte finish. Therefore I was actually planning to pick up the palette in Aura but somehow managed to put Semblance in my basket. 😀 It took me quite a while to figure out the differences between the two palettes in the first place, because they look very similar. Aura is probably better for lighter skin tones as the blush and highlighter are paler than the ones in Semblance. The eyeshadows are also a bit more neutral. Both palettes contain Hollow, Thunder and the eyeshadow in Obsidian.

The highlighter in Gleam is quite different from any other cream highlighter I have ever tried, but I think although it looks a bit scary in the pan, the colour is a lot more sheer and neutral on the skin. I find it best applied with my fingers.

The palette is currently on sale for £13.50! I paid £22.50, which I thought was already a pretty good deal, but if you like what you see you should probably head over to the Illamasqua website right now.

New In: Sleek’s Eye and Cheek Palette in See you at Midnight

collage_20141015180952762_20141015181031394

What Sleek says:

Multi-functional palette contains four eyeshadows and two blushers from our bestselling i-Divine and Blush range. Eye & Cheek Palette provides all of your colour essentials in one convenient compact.

These velvety smooth eyeshadows and blushers are highly pigmented and long-lasting, making blending and defining simple.

Each palette contains complementary neutral and bold shades suited to all skin tones.

Packaged in a handy travel sized compact, with magnetic snap-shut mechanism and also includes a large mirror and two essential brushes for effortless application.

See You at Midnight combines deep blue and pearlescent purple eyeshadows from our Romance i-Divine Palette. Along with Blush in Pomegranate, a golden berry hue and Antique a shimmery dusky rose, for a captivating look.

What I say:

First of all, you are in advantage if you are able to read and unlike me just buy on impulse. The palette includes eyeshadows from the Vintage Romance palette along with the blushes in Pomegranate and Antique, which besides Antique I already own. But Pomegranate swatched just looked so beautiful (and the photo above does it no justice)! Oh well, it definitely still is a handy palette for travelling and includes my favourite blush by Sleek along with some eyeshadows that I would wear on a regular basis.

My impression is that the packaging is a bit sturdier than Sleek’s regular eyeshadow palettes. I carried around several of them in the past when traveling and I noticed that over time a lot of the eyeshadows are breaking apart. The blush cases for example tend to close better from my experience, so hopefully this packaging works similar and keeps the eyeshadows save from damage.

The palette comes with a large, handy mirror and a brush and applicator. The latter two I personally don’t find too practical. I tried using the brush to apply the blush, but found it to be too stiff for my liking and couldn’t spread the blush as evenly as I would have liked. They might come in handy if there is nothing else at hand, but other than that I would not use them.

The palette is also available in Dancing Til Dusk with more neutral shades from Sleek’s Au Natural palette along with the blushes Mirrored Pink (used to part of a limited edition called Aqua Collection) and Sahara. Although I own all of the before mentioned besides Sahara, I could be tempted to buy it for travelling purposes, if the packaging proves to be handy, as this palette again includes some of my favourite Sleek products.

I think both palettes are great for someone who wants to try Sleek products for the first time as you can test their eyeshadows and blushes at the same time. As they mention on their website it includes some of their bestselling products, so you can get a good first impression on what other people like to use. It would also work well for someone who travels a lot and wants to have many products in one handy palette.

Everyday Minerals – Blush

everyday

Everyday Minerals Blush in Nature’s Sweet Side and Nick Nack. Both blushes are easily blended and you only need the tiniest amount of product. Nick Nack is a very nude peach colour that is best for pale skin and those who just want a very natural flush on their cheeks. Nature’s Sweet Side however is a bit more intense once applied, I particularly like to wear it in fall time.

Everday Minerals products are always vegan and cruelty free. Everyday Minerals can be found on PETA’s list of approved companies.

Ingredients

Mica (CI 77019), Lauroyl Lysine. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Ultramarines (CI 77007).

Mica: Is a naturally occurring mineral noted for its transparent sparkly luster.
Lauroyl Lysine: An all-natural amino acid derived from coconut fatty acid, contributing to the products silk like creamy texture and spreadability qualities.
Titanium Dioxide: An inert white mineral that is used as a color adjuster.
Iron Oxides: Cosmetic pigments used to add depths of color.
Ultramarines: An inorganic vibrant pigment used to add color.

Where to buy?

The blushes retail around £8 in the UK. Sometimes you can also find mini sizes.

Sleek – Aqua Collection

Got to love the new Sleek Limited Edition called ‘Aqua Collection’! The blush is a lovely pink blush with a little bit of golden shimmer. I read very different descriptions of the blush, some saying it is a very cold pink, other saying it is a very warm pink. I think it is worth comparing a couple of swatches to make up your mind about it before you buy it.

The eyeshadow palette has some very lovely, mostly shimmery, shades that remind me of vacation and summer. Thus, I would have probably expected the edition to be released in summer instead of now, where at least in Europe we still have Winter pretty much. 😉

See more swatches of the Lagoon Palette on the blogs of MissXtraVaganz  and LetzMakeup. More swatches of the ‘Mirrored Pink’ Blush can be found at GetGawjus and RosesOfBeauty.
